- ACT! 3.0.6 for Windows 95/NT
- Read Me 6/13/97
- Copyright 1997 Symantec Corporation. All rights reserved.
-
- This patch updates ACT! versions 3.0 through 3.0.5 for Windows to
- ACT! version 3.0.6 for Windows.
-
- GENERAL NOTES
- -------------
- * If you are sharing an ACT! database with other users on
- a network, you will get the best performance and reliability if all
- users have upgraded to the same ACT! version. To verify the version
- number, choose About ACT! from the ACT! Help menu.
-
- * There is a known problem with sharing an ACT! database on a
- Microsoft Windows network if any user is running Microsoft
- Windows 95B. You can verify your version of Microsoft Windows by
- clicking the Start button, choosing Settings > Control Panel, then
- double-clicking System. If you have Windows 95B, you will need to
- get VREDIR.VXD from the Microsoft web page at:
-
- THIS UPDATE INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING CHANGES FOR ACT! VERSION 3.0.6:
- ------------------------------------------------------------------
- * You can now use WordPerfect version 7.0 as your default word
- processor. In the General tab of the Preferences dialog box,
- choose WordPerfect 6.x-7.0 from the Word Processor drop-down list.
-
- Note: If you experience problems using WordPerfect 7.0 as your
- default word processor, you should reinstall WordPerfect 7.0
- (using either a Minimum or a Typical installation). If you perform
- a Custom installation, please be sure to include the converters
- and filters by selecting the PerfectFit Conversion option.
-
- * The speed and accuracy of data exchange with Newton MessagePad
- devices have been improved.
-
- * You can now perform double-sided (duplex) printing of address books
- without problems.
-
- * You can now save a generated report in either .RTF or .TXT format.
- In the Run Report dialog box, choose File - Editable Text as the
- output option, then choose Rich Text Format (*.rtf) or Text Only
- (*.txt) from the Save As Type drop-down list in the Save As dialog
- box.
-
- * The Activities/Time Spent report now includes the duration for each
- activity in the report.
-
- * The Show Cleared Activities setting in the Filter Activities and
- the Filter Calendar dialog boxes now remains in effect until you
- change it again.
-
- * The Since Last Link option has been added to the Send group box in
- the Link Setup Wizard. This option allows you to send only contacts
- that you have added or modified since the last time you linked with
- the PDA database.
-
- * You can now add an unlimited number of name prefixes and suffixes
- using the Names tab in the Preferences dialog box.
-
- * When you select an activity in the Task List window, you can now
- call the contact with whom the selected activity is scheduled by
- choosing Phone Contact from the Contact menu. When you complete
- the phone call, the Clear Activity dialog box appears; from this
- dialog box, you can clear the activity and record a history.
-
- * You can now paste text from the Clipboard into the ACT! word
- processor, even if the Clipboard text was created in another
- application.
-
- * When you choose the Create Lookup command from the shortcut
- menu in the Calendar or Task List, the contacts in the lookup
- are sorted in the same order as the activities.
-
- * You can now drag and drop a contact from the Contacts tab of the
- Groups window to any of the calendars, to the Tasklist, or to
- the Activities tab of the Contact window. When you "drop" the
- contact, the Schedule Activity dialog box appears. You can also
- add a contact to a group by dropping it onto a group in the Group
- Name list on the left side of the Groups window.
-
- * When you double-click a row in the Groups tab of the Contact
- window, the Groups window appears with the corresponding group
- selected.
-
- * When you select the Send E-mail Reminder option in the Schedule
- Activity dialog box, only the core contact fields are sent with
- the attached activity in the e-mail reminder. The core contact
- fields are Company, Contact, Title, Department, Phone, Extension,
- Fax, Salutation, ID/Status, Address 1 - 3, City, State, Zip,
- Country, and E-mail Address.
-
- THE ACT! V3.0.5 UPDATE INCLUDED THE FOLLOWING CHANGES:
- ------------------------------------------------------
- * You can now use Microsoft Word version 8.0 (Office 97 version) as
- your default word processor. In the General tab of the Preferences
- dialog box, choose Microsoft Word 6.x-8.0 from the Word Processor
- drop-down list.
-
- * You can now save a report as a text file in .RTF format. In the Run
- Report dialog box, choose File as the output option, then choose
- Rich Text Format (*.rtf) from the Save As Type drop-down list in the
- Save As dialog box. After you save a report in .RTF format, you have
- the option of editing the file in the ACT! Word Processor or in
- Microsoft Word.
-
- * You can now exchange data with the Psion hand-held device. From
- the File menu, choose Data Exchange > Link. In the Link dialog box,
- click Setup. Select the Psion in the list of PDA's, then follow
- the on-screen instructions to finish selecting options for linking
- with the Psion.
-
- * You can now edit ACT! phone numbers using the standard Windows
- editing conventions. When you edit a phone number, you are now
- automatically in Insert mode. You can also select phone numbers
- and use the standard Copy, Paste, and Undo commands.
-
- * When you reposition the Alarm dialog box, the Timer, or the Dialer
- on the screen, these dialog boxes will always appear in the new
- position until you move them again.
-
- * When you turn on or off the display of Notes, Histories, or
- Attachments in the Notes/History tab, these settings remain in effect
- until you change them again.
-
- * The speed of clearing activities has been improved.
-
- * You can now set additional filtering options for what appears on your
- printed calendars. To specify filtering options, click the Filter
- button in the Calendar Options dialog box. The new Filter Calendar
- Printout dialog box appears. This dialog box contains the following
- filtering options for printing calendars:
-
- - Selected users' or all users' public activities (in prior versions
- of ACT! 3.0, you could select only the Public Activities option
- in the Calendar Options dialog box, which printed all users'
- public activities). If you want to print selected users' public
- activities in addition to your own activities, be sure to select
- your name and the names of the other users in the Selected Users
- list in the Filter Calendar Printout dialog box.
-
- - Activity types to print (calls, meetings, and/or to-do's). In
- prior versions of ACT! 3.0, these options were in the Calendar
- Options dialog box.
-
- - Activity dates to print. In addition to specifying a date range of
- activities to print, you can now specify the printing of activities
- for all dates, for today only, for past dates only, or for today
- and future dates.
-
- - Activity priorities to print (high, medium, and/or low). In
- prior versions of ACT! 3.0, you could only turn on or off the
- printing of priorities. Now you can specify which priorities of
- activities to print.
-
- - Printing only timeless activities.
-
- - Printing cleared activities.
-
- * When you are paging through contact records, switching to a different
- window, or opening a database, the text in the first active field is
- no longer selected. This will prevent you from inadvertently typing
- over existing data.
-
- * When running ACT! with Windows NT, users with Standard privileges can
- now use any of the supported word processors.
-
- * The telephone country codes have been updated for the Czech Republic
- (420) and Slovakia (421).
-
- * Improvements have been made to ACT! speaker phone support. If you
- have the Unimodem/V driver and a supported INF file from your modem
- manufacturer, you should have full speaker phone capabilities within
- ACT!
-
- * Enhancements have been made to the way ACT! handles contact names
- containing prefixes and suffixes in letters, memos, faxes, reports,
- and lookups. You can enter contact names with the first or last name
- first. If you enter the last name first, you can use either a
- comma (,) or a semicolon (;) to separate the last name from the
- first name. For example, you can enter the name "Chris Huffman" in
- any of these ways:
-
- Chris Huffman
- Huffman, Chris
- Huffman; Chris
-
- If a name has a suffix (such as Jr or PhD), you can separate the
- suffix from the last name with or without commas. For example, you
- can enter either of the following:
-
- Chris Huffman Jr
- Chris Huffman, Jr
-
- However, if a name has a suffix and you want to enter the last name
- first, you must keep the suffix with the last name and use a
- semicolon (;) to separate the last name from the first name. For
- example, to enter the name "Chris Huffman, Jr" with the last name
- first, you must enter the following:
-
- Huffman, Jr; Chris
-
- THE ACT! V3.0.4 UPDATE INCLUDED THE FOLLOWING CHANGES:
- ------------------------------------------------------
- * When you send a fax using WinFax PRO, you can now attach a cover page
- and/or other documents to the fax.
-
- * You can now perform a mail merge with WordPerfect and send the merged
- documents using WinFax PRO.
-
- * If you convert an old database that is not in your default database
- folder, the program now asks if you want to move it to the default
- folder. This makes it easier to find your data in the future.
-
- * Numeric Fields are now displayed with the number of decimal places
- specified in the field definition. You can no longer use the Format
- tab of the Object Properties dialog box in the Layout Designer to
- specify how data is displayed in numeric fields.
-
- * Notes and History text scrolls one line at a time on the
- Notes/History tab of the Contact window.
-
- * You can now dial a phone number by double-clicking the number in the
- list in the Dialer dialog box.
-
- * When you convert an older database, the dates for notes are
- converted more accurately.
-
- * The contact counter is updated more quickly. Note that you can work
- in ACT! even while the counter displays a question mark.
-
- THE ACT! V3.0.3 UPDATE INCLUDED THE FOLLOWING CHANGES:
- ------------------------------------------------------
- * Improved application load time.
-
- * You can now spell check notes, e-mail messages, and text fields.
- To spell check a note, e-mail message, or text field, choose the
- Spelling command from the Tools menu, or click the Spelling tool
- in the toolbar.
-
- Note that the Spelling menu item and Spelling tool will not appear
- if you have previously modified your menus or toolbars. To add
- the Spelling tool or menu command, choose Customize from the Tools
- menu. Click the Toolbars or Menus tab, then select the
- Tools-Spelling command from the Commands list at the bottom of the
- dialog box. Click Insert to add the command, then Save to save
- the changes.
-
- * When you schedule an activity with multiple contacts, you can now
- schedule one activity for all the contacts involved, or schedule
- an individual activity for each contact.
-
- * Reinstated ACT! 2.0 calendar view shortcut keys. You can use
- F5 to see the Monthly calendar, F3 to see the Weekly calendar,
- and Shift+F5 to see the Daily calendar.
-
- * You can now select the fields that you want to export to delimited
- text files.
-
- Note: Loading and Saving Maps works only with contacts, not with
- groups.
-
- * You can now move quickly to the previous or next year in any
- mini-calendar or drop-down date selector by clicking the
- double-arrow buttons at the top of the calendar or date selector.
-
- * Notes/History and Task List reports are now created for only
- those contacts that have notes and histories or activities
- associated with them.
-
- * You can now add to lookups, narrow lookups, and replace lookups
- when creating a lookup By Example, just as you can when creating
- a lookup using a single search criterion (for example, when creating
- a lookup by Company or by City).
-
- * When you create a lookup using a single search criterion (such as
- Lookup>City), the last search criterion you entered will appear
- in the Lookup dialog box the next time you create the same type
- of lookup. For example, if you entered "San Francisco" as the
- value to be found in the Lookup dialog box, "San Francisco" will
- appear in the Lookup dialog box the next time you choose Lookup>City.
-
- * When you create a lookup By Example, typing an asterisk (*) in a
- field causes ACT! to look only for non-blank occurrences of that
- field.
-
- * The Task List and the Alarm dialog box now display activity and alarm
- count indicators. A number now appears in the Alarm dialog box
- indicating the total number of alarms in the dialog box. A number
- also appears in the status bar at the bottom of the Task List
- indicating the total number of activities in the Task List.
-
- * Improved performance when working with WinFax PRO.
-
- * Reinstated the ACT! 2.0 AutoWinFax icon in the ACT! word processor.
-
- * ACT! now sends only the current lookup to the WinFax PRO phonebook.
-
- * The Create History dialog box now appears after each call you make
- using the ACT! dialer, even when you are not timing the call.
-
- * Implemented full support for international Caller ID.
-
- * Improved ability to use non-voice modems for Caller ID.
-
- * A My Record is now created automatically when you add a user to
- the database.
-
- * Fixed capitalization problems when you type into fields with
- drop-down lists.
-
- * Memo fields are now correctly imported from dBaseIII and prior
- versions of dBase.
-
- * Eliminated the need for the CTL3D32.DLL file on Windows 95 systems.
-
- THE ACT! V3.0.2 UPDATE INCLUDED THE FOLLOWING CHANGES:
- ------------------------------------------------------
- * Use of the current lookup in address book and report printing has
- been enhanced.
-
- * Reinstates ACT! v2.0's use of commas (,) and semi-colons (;) when
- printing company and contact names.
-
- * Speed improvement when paging from contact to contact with the
- Activities tab active.
-
- * Enabled database creation on extremely large hard disks
- (larger than 2 Gigabytes available space).
-
- * Enabled running of reports from folder names that included a period
- (such as "c:\act3.0")
-
- * Increased size limit of core database fields such as Company and
- Contact.
-
- * Improved capabilities for entries added to drop-down lists of new
- fields.
-
- * Improved efficiency of synchronization packets, allowing
- synchronizations to send less data.
-
- * Enabled importing, merging, and swapping of blank date fields.
-
- * Improved error detection and handling when Dialer finds a
- partially installed modem.
-
- * Improved ability to send multiple faxes and perform broadcast
- faxing.
-
- * Eliminated random system errors that sometimes occurred when
- exiting the program or working in the calendar.
- --------------------------------------------------------------------
- The remainder of this file contains information about changes and
- additions made since the documentation and online help were completed.

-
- Performance enhancement
- -----------------------
- Improved performance when paging through contacts while the Activities
- tab is open.
-
- Installing a shared copy of ACT! on a network server
- ----------------------------------------------------
- Network administrators can install ACT! on a network server so that
- multiple users can use the same copy of ACT! Note that you must have
- a licensed copy of the software for each user.
-
- To install ACT! on a network server:
-
- 1. Insert the ACT! for Windows Disk 1 into your floppy disk drive,
- or insert the ACT! for Windows CD into your CD-ROM drive.
-
- If you are installing from the ACT! for Windows CD, an installer
- screen appears automatically. Click Exit in this screen.
-
- 2. From the Windows Start menu, choose Run.
-
- 3. In the Run text box, type the following, specifying the appropriate
- drive letter for the floppy disk or CD:
-
- A:\SETUP.EXE /A
-
- Note that if you are installing from the ACT! for Windows CD, the
- SETUP.EXE file is located in the ACT30 folder on the CD-ROM drive.
- You'll need to specify the complete path for this.
-
- 4. Follow the on-screen installation instructions. Note that if you
- select the Custom installation option and install only some of the
- ACT! components, only the components you select will be available to
- the network ACT! users.
-
- When you finish the installation, ACT! is installed on the network
- server, the ACT! icon is installed on your local computer, and the
- individual users can install ACT! on their local computers.
-
- NOTE: Do not install ACT! on the computer from which you performed
- the network installation. Doing so will overwrite data, possibly
- causing you to lose access to LiveUpdate.
-
- To install ACT! on a network user's local computer:
-
- NOTE: Network users must have Write access to the \ACT directory on the
- server from which they are installing the software.
-
- 1. On the network user's local computer, choose Run from the
- Windows Start menu.
-
- 2. In the Run dialog box, click the Browse button.
-
- 3. In the Browse dialog box, locate the SETUP.EXE file on the network
- drive on which ACT! is installed, and click Open.
-
- The Run dialog box reappears with the correct path displayed.
-
- 4. Click OK in the Run dialog box.
-
- 5. Follow the on-screen installation instructions.
-
- When you finish the installation, the ACT! data files, templates,
- Demo database, and ACT! icon are installed on the user's local
- computer. Note that the LiveUpdate command in the Help menu is not
- available to network users. Only the network administrator can use
- the LiveUpdate command to receive product updates.
-
- Installing individual copies of ACT! from a Novell NetWare Server
- -----------------------------------------------------------------
- If you copy the ACT! installation disks to a Novell NetWare Server
- so that individuals can install ACT! on their local computers directly
- from the network server, make sure that the folder to which you copy
- the disks has no more than 8.3 characters in its name. If you use
- a longer name for the folder, the installation will not work. Note
- that you must have a licensed copy of ACT! for each user.
-
- Known software compatibility problems
- -------------------------------------
- If you have Adobe Type Manager (ATM) on your computer, you will
- experience problems previewing ACT! printouts and reports. To avoid
- these problems, turn off Adobe Type Manager and restart Windows.
-
- Scheduling a once-a-year activity
- ---------------------------------
- You can schedule an activity that occurs once per year using the
- Recurring Settings tab of the Schedule Activity dialog box.
-
- To schedule a once-a-year activity:
-
- 1. Open the Monthly Calendar by clicking the Monthly Calendar icon
- at the bottom of the ACT! window.
-
- 2. On the Monthly Calendar, select the month and day on which you
- want to schedule the yearly activity.
-
- 3. From the Contact menu, choose Schedule Call, Schedule Meeting,
- or Schedule To-do.
-
- The Schedule Activity dialog box appears.
-
- 4. Specify activity options in the Activity Information tab, then
- click the Recurring Settings tab.
-
- 5. In the Recurring Settings tab, select the Custom option.
-
- The day that you selected on the Monthly Calendar is selected on the
- mini-calendar in the Recurring Settings tab.
-
- 6. Enter 12 in the Every _ Months field.
-
- This will specify an activity that occurs once per year.
-
- 7. Choose a date from the Until drop-down date selector, or type a
- date in the field.
-
- This is the date on which the activity will stop recurring.
-
- 8. Click OK.
-
- Finding contacts associated with a specific activity
- ----------------------------------------------------
- The Go To Contact command has been added to the shortcut menu in the
- Calendar and Task List window. This command lets you view the contact
- or contacts with whom you have scheduled an activity.
-
- To find contacts associated with an activity:
-
- 1. Make sure that either the Calendar or Task List window is active.
-
- 2. Select an activity.
-
- 3. Press the right mouse button and choose Go To Contact from the
- shortcut menu.
-
- The contacts with whom you have scheduled the selected activity appear
- in the Contact window.
-
- Specifying duplicate-checking criteria for importing (merging)
- ACT! 3.0 databases
- --------------------------------------------------------------
- When you import another ACT! 3.0 database into a currently open ACT!
- 3.0 database, ACT! checks for duplicate records using the criteria
- specified in the Match Duplicates Using group box in the Advanced
- tab of the Define Fields dialog box. By default, ACT! considers two
- contact records to be duplicates if they have the same contact name,
- company name, and phone number. You can set different criteria for
- this in the Match Duplicates Using group box in the Advanced tab of
- the Define Fields dialog box.
-
- Snoozed alarms in converted ACT! 2.0 databases
- ----------------------------------------------
- If you convert an ACT! 2.0 database in which you have snoozed
- alarms, the alarms will appear immediately after you convert the
- database to ACT! 3.0 format.
-
- Reopening the Mail Merge Fields dialog box in Word or WordPerfect
- -----------------------------------------------------------------
- If you close the Mail Merge Fields dialog box when you are editing
- a word-processing template in either Word or WordPerfect, you can
- now reopen the dialog box by choosing ACT! Mail Merge Fields from the
- Word or WordPerfect Insert menu.
-
- Problems using Microsoft Fax with ACT!
- --------------------------------------
- If you try to send a fax from ACT! using Microsoft Fax and you receive
- a message saying that the modem is in use, choose Preferences from the
- ACT! Edit menu, click the Dialer tab, and make sure that the "Modem has
- speaker phone capabilities" option is turned off. Note that if you turn
- off this option, the "Lookup Contact Using Caller ID" option will not
- work.
-
- Printing an address book for the current lookup
- -----------------------------------------------
- If you experience problems printing an address book for the current
- lookup, sort the lookup by company name before you print. To sort by
- company, choose Sort from the ACT! Edit menu, and select the Company
- option from the Sort Contacts By list.
-
- Specifying how data is displayed in fields in a layout
- ------------------------------------------------------
- You can no longer change the formatting of numeric, date, time, or
- currency fields in a layout using the Format tab in the layout
- designer's Object Properties dialog box. Data in numeric, date, time,
- and currency fields will be formatted according to your current
- Windows settings.
-
- Adding items to field drop-down lists
- -------------------------------------
- If you create a new field, but experience the loss of items added to
- the drop-down list using the Edit List command, you will then need to
- go to the Define Fields dialog box, select the Drop-down tab, and
- click OK. Doing this will ensure that any field drop-down items that
- you added in the layout will remain in the field's drop-down list.
-
- Installing ACT! on a Windows NT server
- --------------------------------------
- When using ACT! 3.0 with Windows NT, ACT! should be installed and
- uninstalled by a user with Administrator privileges.
-
- Installing ACT! on a Windows NT version 3.51 server
- ---------------------------------------------------
- If you are installing ACT! on a Windows NT version 3.51 server and
- the server's build number is less than 1057, you will not be able to
- run either the ACT! Database Setup Wizard or the ACT! Quick Tour.
- To verify your Windows NT server's build number, choose About from
- the Program Manager's Help menu. The About Box contains the version
- of Windows NT followed by the build number in parentheses, for example,
- "Version 3.51 (Build xxxx)."
-
- Using WordPerfect with ACT! on a Windows NT 3.51 system
- -------------------------------------------------------
- To use WordPerfect 6.x with ACT! on a system running Microsoft Windows
- NT 3.51, you will need to move the TEMP variables from the User
- Environment Variable list to the System Environment Variable list in
- the Windows System control panel. For information about moving the
- variables from one list to another, see your Windows online help.
-
- Using bitmap (BMP) files in ACT! layouts
- ----------------------------------------
- If you create bitmap (BMP) files in a graphics application such as
- Adobe Photoshop so that you can add them to a background of an ACT!
- contact or group layout, you will need to use the Windows color palette
- to select colors. If you use the Photoshop color palette (or the color
- palette in another graphics application) to specify colors, the bitmap
- may not keep its color settings when you use it in an ACT! layout.
-
- Additional synchronization information
- --------------------------------------
- * Synchronizing using a modem
- ---------------------------
- If you have trouble connecting to a remote user's modem during
- synchronization, first make sure that the remote user is ready to
- receive synchronization messages. If you are making a long-distance
- call, try reducing your modem's maximum speed. For example, if your
- modem's maximum speed is set to 57600, reduce the maximum speed to
- 19200.
-
- * Sending and receiving My Record information
- -------------------------------------------
- The My Record is included in a synchronization update even if the
- My Record contact is not part of the synchronization group.
-
- * Setting up synchronization with other users for the first time
- --------------------------------------------------------------
- To save time when initially synchronizing data with other users,
- you may want to make a copy of the database and give the copy
- to each user before setting up the users for synchronization. Then,
- each user will need to set up their synchronization users prior to
- making any changes to the database. After everyone sets up their
- synchronization users, they can synchronize data with one another.
- Note that if you set up a synchronization user before distributing
- the copies of the database, you will receive an error message the
- first time you attempt to apply a synchronization update. To fix
- this, delete the sync user, then reapply the update.
-
- * Receiving a synchronization update from a new user
- --------------------------------------------------
- The first time you receive a synchronization update from a new user,
- you will be prompted to set up the new user for synchronization.
- To ensure that you have only one user name for this user, do not
- change the user's name during the setup process. If you assign a
- different name for this user, you will have two entries for the
- user in your synchronization user list.
-
- * Synchronizing data effectively with another user
- ------------------------------------------------
- Before synchronizing data with another user, make sure that both of
- your databases have the same field attributes, especially for the
- field type and field size.
-
- * Sending and receiving users unexpectedly
- ----------------------------------------
- Users are automatically included in a synchronization update if
- they are the Record Creators of a contact or group that is being
- included in the synchronization update.
-
- * Synchronizing notes
- -------------------
- When you synchronize notes, exiting notes that have been edited by
- more than one user are not merged together as they were in ACT!
- Mobile Link version 2.0. Instead, the most recently created or
- edited note is added and older changes to a note are ignored.
-
- * Synchronizing efficiently using CompuServe
- ------------------------------------------
- If you use CompuServe to synchronize data, you can minimize your
- connection time by sending and applying synchronization updates
- separately. If you send and apply updates simultaneously, you will
- stay connected to CompuServe while ACT! compiles its update to be
- sent. However, if you send and apply updates separately, ACT!
- creates the synchronization update before connecting to CompuServe.
-
- * Using cc:Mail Mobile for synchronization
- ----------------------------------------
- If you send a synchronization update to yourself through cc:Mail
- and then try to apply the update using cc:Mail Mobile, the update
- will not be applied if you select the Apply Updates option in the
- Synchronize dialog box. To apply the update, open the cc:Mail Inbox
- in the ACT! E-mail window, open the message containing the update,
- and double-click the update to apply it.
-
- * Using the "Clear the synchronized records to be deleted" option
- ---------------------------------------------------------------
- Turn on the "Clear the synchronized records to be deleted" option
- in the Synchronize dialog box prior to applying a synchronization
- update if you want to clear the current lookup of contacts to be
- deleted and receive a new set of contacts to be deleted. Turn off
- this option if you want the newly deleted contacts to be appended
- to the current lookup of contacts to be deleted.
-
- * "Cannot apply synchronization update" error message
- ---------------------------------------------------
- If you receive an error message that says "Cannot apply
- synchronization update. The synchronization update may be from a
- previous version of ACT!, it may be damaged, or there may not be
- sufficient disk space to apply the update" you may simply have
- unnecessary temporary files in the Sync folder. If you see
- this error message, try deleting all files in the Sync folder that
- do not have the .SNC extension, then try to reapply the update.
-
- * Synchronizing attachments
- -------------------------
- Files that are attached to contact or group records are not
- sent with synchronization updates--only the shortcuts to the files
- are sent. If the attached document and the application used to
- create the document exist on the computer receiving the update,
- the user receiving the update can relink the attachment to the
- contact or group record.
-
- Additional dialer information
- -----------------------------
- * New dialer option
- -----------------
- A new option called "Dial as a toll call" has been added to the
- dialer. Select this option if you are dialing a number within your
- area code that requires a 1 before the number. Note that you do not
- need to select this option if you are dialing a number in a different
- area code.
-
- * Using the dialer on a notebook computer
- ---------------------------------------
- ACT! keeps separate dialer configuration settings for each
- Windows 95 hardware profile. Therefore when you boot your computer
- while it is docked, the dialer settings that you select will be in
- effect only when your computer is docked. When your computer is
- undocked, you will need to configure the dialer again. ACT!
- automatically keeps track of the dialer settings for each hardware
- profile.
-
- * Setting dialing properties for the U.S.
- ---------------------------------------
- If you are seeing an extra 1 in the Number to Dial field of the
- ACT! Dialer, open the Windows 95 Dialing Properties dialog box
- and verify that you have not entered a 1 in either field of the
- "To access an outside line, first dial __ for local, __ for long
- distance" option. These fields are for telephone systems that
- require you to dial a 9 or another digit to reach an outside line.
- Make sure that you have selected United States of America (1) in the
- "I am in" field. This ensures that the Windows 95 telephone services
- will dial a 1 for long distance calls.
-
- * Using Windows 3.x telephony drivers under Windows 95
- ----------------------------------------------------
- If you have a telephony (TAPI) driver that was originally designed
- for Windows 3.x, it may not install completely under Windows 95.
- The Windows 3.x driver instructions may have instructed you to open
- the Telephony icon in the control panel. Before you can do this in
- Windows 95, you will need change the name of a file by doing the
- following:
-
- 1) From the Windows Start menu, choose Find>Files or Folders.
- 2) Type TELEPHON.CP$ in the Named field.
- 3) Click Find Now.
- 4) Right-click the file name when it appears in the lower part of
- Find dialog box.
- 5) From the shortcut menu, choose Rename.
- 6) Change the name to TELEPHON.CPL
- 7) From the File menu, choose Close to close the Find dialog box.
- A Telephony icon will now appear in your control panel.
-
- * Using Creative Labs Phone Blaster with ACT!
- -------------------------------------------
- The modem setup software that comes with the Phone Blaster
- configures the Windows 95 Unimodem or Unimodem/V driver for the
- Phone Blaster. For Caller ID to work properly, your Windows 95
- installation must include the Unimodem/V driver. You can download
- the Unimodem/V driver from the Microsoft FTP site.
-
- All testing with ACT! has been performed with only the Phone Blaster
- 28.8 PnP model. Following are issues we have found in testing the
- dialer with the Phone Blaster 28.8 PnP model:
-
- Issue: During an incoming call, the Answer button is always dimmed.
- Answer: The Unimodem/V driver configuration for the Phone Blaster
- incorrectly reports that it cannot answer an incoming call;
- therefore the Answer button is dimmed. You will need to use a
- telephone that is connected to the same line to answer incoming
- calls.
-
- Problems using ACT! hotlinks with Excel spreadsheets
- ----------------------------------------------------
- If you participated in the ACT! 3.0 beta program, you may experience
- problems if you try to use the Paste Special command to insert
- ACT! contacts into an Excel spreadsheet. To correct this problem,
- you'll need to remove the ACTWIN3 entry from the Windows Registry
- HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. The ACTWIN3 entry was added to the Registry when
- you used the ACT! 3.0 beta software, but it is no longer needed.
-
- Dimmed commands in the Write menu
- ---------------------------------
- If you participated in the ACT! 3.0 beta program and you are using
- Microsoft Word as your default word-processing application, you may
- occasionally see dimmed commands in the Write menu after performing
- a word-processing function. If you experience this problem, you will
- need to delete the Act_main.dot file from the Winword/Startup folder.
-
- Losing commands you've added to the Lookup, Write, or Reports menus
- -------------------------------------------------------------------
- If you have used the Modify Menu command in the Lookup, Write, or
- Reports menus and you no longer see the commands that you added to
- the menus, choose Customize from the Tools menu and click the Menus
- tab. Scroll through the menus and make sure that the last command in
- the Lookup, Write, and Reports menus is "Modify Items." If this
- command is missing, you can add it back to the menus. This will bring
- back the items that you had previously added to each of the menus.
-
- LiveUpdate and Internet Firewalls
- ---------------------------------
- If your Internet connection is protected by a firewall, you may not be
- able to use LiveUpdate. If this is the case, you will need to have
- your network server administrator configure a packet-filtering router
- to allow for transmission on the following port:
-
- Host: update.symantec.com
- Outbound data port: 21
- Inbound data port: 20
- Protocol: FTP
